Farming fresh Atlantic salmon and trout to the highest welfare standards is of the utmost importance to Aquascot for a number of reasons.

We benefit, of course, from healthy and well-grown fish - there’s clear evidence that low levels of stress in farmed fish results in superior taste and texture - but we also acutely understand that we’re part of something bigger and more meaningful.

Informed by our values, our expertise, the third-party organisations we engage with and our desire to raise welfare standards to new heights, our ‘feet on the farm’ policies seek first to understand the issues and processes that are prevalent and then encourage close control of husbandry practices by the farmers we work with. These policies seek to minimise negative impacts through embracing innovation, never skipping the details and striving for continuous improvement.

Traceable

All farmed fish must be fully traceable to known, audited farm sites – we are rigorous in our checks, particular about standards and are committed to only working with farmers who we know and trust.

Audited

Audit protocols by definition include assessment of fish welfare, veterinary care, husbandry, protection of the marine environment and sources of marine-based feed ingredients - no shortcuts are taken, all data counts towards our greater understanding of fish farming and its ongoing development.

Certified

Farmed fish must be independently certified to a recognised third party standard, or be working towards achieving certification in 2020. Third parties we engage with include the RSPCA, Humane Slaughter, Soil Association, Global Gap and more.

Responsible

Aquaculture activity must be conducted in a socially responsible manner, one that is well within national rules and regulations with regard to the ILO (International Labour Organisation) convention on labour rights - never jeopardising the livelihoods of aquaculture workers and local communities.
