Salmon is a healthy source of protein and contains less saturated fat than an equal portion of nearly any other meat or poultry protein source. As an oily fish, it is also rich in beneficial omega-3 fatty acids. Eaten regularly as part of a balanced diet, omega-3 can help lower levels of cholesterol and reduce risk of strokes and heart disease. The omega-3 fats, EPA and DHA serve differing functions in contributing to our health. EPA makes the platelets in our blood less sticky which could help prevent a heart attack or stroke. DHA may help in stabilizing heart rhythm. In order to gain most benefit from omega-3, it must come from seafood, as opposed to supplements.
Omega-3 has been identified as important in producing healthy children especially during the unborn, newly born and infancy stages for optimum brain and vision development. Studies have been carried out at Oxford University and found that children given omega-3 showed better concentration and behaviour levels. Omega-3 can help improve rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease control, Alzheimer's and brain function. Read more about amazing omega-3 fish oils. |
