The raw material used in our product is what really sets us apart from our competition. The salmon is farmed according to our own very rigid Waitrose policy, meaning that the salmon is sourced in accordance with exceptional farming codes of practice, welfare and husbandry. This ensures that the fish is of the highest quality possible for the consumer to enjoy, whilst being sustainable and respectful of the environment.
Salmon is a healthy source of protein and contains less saturated fat than an equal portion of nearly any other meat or poultry protein source. As an oily fish, it is also rich in beneficial omega-3 fatty acids. Eaten regularly as part of a balanced diet, omega-3 can help lower levels of cholesterol and reduce risk of strokes and heart disease.
The omega-3 fats, EPA and DHA serve differing functions in contributing to our health. EPA makes the platelets in our blood less sticky which could help prevent a heart attack or stroke. DHA may help in stabilizing heart rhythm. In order to gain most benefit from omega-3, it must come from seafood, as opposed to supplements. Scientific evidence proves that the introduction of two portions of oily fish a week to a person’s diet can have significant health benefits.
Omega-3 has been identified as important in producing healthy children especially during the unborn, newly born and infancy stages for optimum brain and vision development.
Omega-3 can help relieve rheumatoid arthritis, control heart disease, relieve Alzheimer’s, and improve brain function.
At the very centre of all that we do are the fish. Without fish there would be no community. Our objective is simple: happy fish. We need to listen to what they tell us.
In practical terms this means keeping the stocking densities low, placing them in well-chosen sites with good tidal flows and plenty of oxygen. It means feeding them with really good feed. Well looked after fish face little stress and suffer few if any health problems. Measured by the use of antibiotics – none in the final product – our fish are some of the healthiest of farmed animals.
When we come to harvest the fish everything we do is designed to minimise stress. We take real pride in the fact that the retail members of our community regularly pick up the National Animal Welfare Awards. Our retail partners’ awards success run continues: Compassion in World Farming named Waitrose as the UK’s Most Compassionate Supermarket 2009/10.
